Careers Week in the English Department

22nd Nov 2016

As part of the department’s contribution to our annual Careers Week event, we invited Mr Mark Hughes into school to talk to the pupils about careers in the arts – theatre, film and the media.

MARK HUGHES is a former teacher and now founder and artistic director of EDAM (Education through Drama, Art and Media). EDAM is a Newry based company which specialises in providing professional theatre and arts training and support services to schools and other bodies, including the film industry.  Furthermore, Marc is very closely affiliated with the highly acclaimed and All-Ireland winning theatre group, Newpoint Players in Newry.  Among the famous names that have “graduated” from Newpoint and gone on to become established and very successful actors are brother and sister, John and Susan Lynch

Currently  Northern Ireland is becoming a leading player in film industry with productions such as “Game of Thrones”, “The Fall “ and indeed the new BBC Sunday evening drama, “My Mother and Other Stranger“ all being filmed here. Mark was able to open our pupils minds to the boundless career possibilities that can be tapped into – both in front of and behind the cameras.  He was able to tell him that one of the leading “boys” in “My Mother and Other Stranger“ had been a pupil in St Paul’s in Bessbrook and only took up acting after joining one of Mark’s afterschool drama classes.

What’s more, he encouraged them to get involved and take the career opportunities that are happening all around them now.  In particular, he gave them advice on how to get started in a theatre/film career eg joining a drama club or working as extra on the latest blockbuster!  He also gave them very sound advice on developing their CVs, improving their interview techniques and avoiding the pitfalls of social media . . . prospective employers do check it out!
